Tiger balm has long been used in Chinese medicine to help relieve pain. These convenient patches are simple to use – very similar to how you’d apply a normal plaster:

* Clean and dry the area that’s affected
* Remove the protective backing from the tiger balm patch – make sure you don’t contaminate the patch
* Gently apply the plaster to the appropriate area of skin
* Smooth the patch onto your skin
* It’s suggested that you leave the patch in place for up to 12 hours and do this 5 times a week.
* The main (active) ingredients in this tiger balm patch are camphor (extracted from laurel trees and has got a long history of use in Chinese culture), menthol (a counter-irritant) and capsicum extract (this has been cultivated by humans for thousands of years). They all have a long history of being used in Chinese herbal medicine

Tiger balm is biocompatible which (in plain English) means that it’s usually safe for us to use and doesn’t normally produce any allergic or skin reactions. That said, as with anything you put on your skin, if you’re not sure then you should test a small area first.

These big patches (they measure about 10cm x 7cm) are designed to let your skin breathe – important if you’re going to be wearing them for the recommended 12 hours a day – but are also designed to be easy to remove without ripping out any hair from your body when you do that. If the patch is bigger than the area you want to treat, you can always cut it down to size.

People often use tiger balm patches to help relieve aches and pains for all sorts of symptoms including back & joint pain as well as helping relieve the pain associated with osteoarthritis. Obviously you should consult your doctor if you have regular problems.
